Landscape and Garden Laborer, 2026
This is a very part time seasonal job working for the owners of the land and Blanchard Mountain Farm business. It is
not working for the business itself but you would be working on projects on five or so acres “on the farm”, including
our home site.
We are looking for a strong, responsible and committed landscape and garden laborer to work approximately 4-5 flexible hours/week starting sometime in April 2026 and continuing until early November 2026. Some weeks there may not be work (due to few tasks, your schedule or the owners’ schedule). Conversely, there may be occasional weeks when we need someone for up to 7-8 hours to accomplish special tasks.
If you cannot commit to working this type and length of schedule; including over the summer and into fall, and being in the out-of-doors in all types of weather, please do not apply. The job is unique and we will spend much time training the right individual to help us steward our land. If you and we find that this is a good fit, the job might be repeatable in 2027. We’ve only had several individuals in this role because those trained grew to love being at our place, learning new skills and enjoyed the flexibility, so they stayed multiple years. This is a great job for college students or those with other part time jobs. WWU students have told us it is a refreshing break from school to work here and is worth the commute.
We have a small organic farm on 20 acres in the Samish Flats of Bow, WA in Skagit County off Chuckanut Drive near Edison. The farm is 30 minutes south of Bellingham with lovely views. If you look at our website, you can see that we “HAD” an active commercial vegetable and flower business through the end of 2023. We are now mostly retired but still manage the land, grow a few things commercially and live at the farm. We’ve planted 100’s of native plants and perennial flowers around the farm and have landscape beds around our home and outbuildings. We need an assistant to help us with labor on the land.
Note: We also lease a portion of our farm to another organic wholesale farm business and they grow annual crops. This job is not working with our lessee, though at times you will be working on adjacent land at the same time so you will be in close proximity to a fun, engaging small commercial operation.
Duties involve working on beds around our home, outbuildings, in native hedgerows and in two 100’ rows of herbs, rhubarb, flowers and a few vegetables. Tasks include weeding and removing morning glory, buttercup and other weeds, digging in landscape beds, cutting blackberry that we use for eating, edging around beds with shovels and using multiple hand tools. There will be other related duties as assigned. We will train you in helping to occasionally prune hedgerows as needed. We may train you to occasionally mow on our riding mower and/or use our weed whacker. We have some unique plants that you will learn over time.
The hours will be during times when both the owner and worker are mutually available; especially in the spring for training. This could even be late afternoon/early evening. As experience and confidence build, you might be able to work your shift if the owner is not present. Currently, the best times for the owner are after 1:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. There is more flexibility on Wednesdays; including mornings. Occasional weekends are possible but not preferred as a regular schedule.
This is rain or shine work. Outdoor work may be wet and muddy, or sunny and beautiful, or both. Prepare for rain or sun. You should have rain gear and good shoes/boots that can get dirty/muddy.
We are looking for someone that enjoys being outdoors, likes HARD, efficient work in all weather and is comfortable getting dirty. It requires stamina, a strong back and sometimes lifting heavy materials. You may be bending over or kneeling for hours at a time, weeding. We can train you in the chores and plants but we prefer prior experience doing physical outdoor work. It would be helpful if you have some gardening experience. We are looking for someone that is interested in and committed to this type of work on a large open space.
We recognize this job is not a lot of hours or money so passion for the work goes a long way! Both owners are Western grads (College of the Environment, circa early 1980’s); with long professions, prior to farming, in environmental education and public school nursing. We have a lot to share about managing land and growing; having both worked on farms and landscapes for decades; including starting and running our own farm since 2013.
Rate of pay: Starting rate is $18/hour. The rate can go up after training and is dependent upon experience and performance.
Please initiate applying by sending a brief message through the contact form on our website at www.blanchardmountainfarm.com/contact We will then send you an email address so you can send detailed information about your applicable experience and interest in this work, days/times you would be available this spring and where you can attach a resume.
